1. Train all students how to use the matrix system. | Owen | Students will be trained the first week of school and monitored throughout the year. | Unit matrix | All students are consistently using the matrix system |
2. Utilize matrices daily while teacher monitors students' usage. | Owen | Show students how to consistently use the matrix. | Unit matrix | Students are consistently using the matrix system and their scores show they are meeting standards |
3. Provide specific training to students not utilizing the matrix system. | Owen | Students will be monitored on an ongoing basis and as they need training, it will be provided throughout the year. | Unit matrix | Assessment scores remain high |
4. Solicit feedback from student on effectiveness on matrix system. | Owen | Ongoing | Unit matrix | Feedback from students to determine changes/improvements to the matrix system. |
5. Continue to provide specific training to students not utilizing the matrix. | Owen | Ongoing | Unit matrix | Assessment scores improve |
Rebecca,
ReplyDeleteThis seems like an excellent research opportunity as you have already garnered some data and feedback on the matrix system. I must admit, I had never heard of it before, but I can see how it really puts the responsibility in the hands of the students, while being guided by the teacher. I especially like how you plan to continually follow up on the students not using the matrix effectively.
I am looking forward to seeing your results. I think this is an excellent idea and it worked great for us in our last district. I wish you all the best while your implement your plan. I hope that your students become commended in every area and every pursuit as you strive to instill excellence in them.
ReplyDeleteThe continual monitoring will be key.
Wish you the best.
Will there be training for teachers in how to incorporate this matrix into their lessons? I am not certain that I understand what this matrix system is. I like the idea of presenting a list of learning outcomes for the students, but I don't understand how they are to interact with it on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteThe SS team has been using the matrix for system for 3 years now. We tell them what they need to learn at the beginning of each unit (learning targets). When we present notes or do activities, students tie the learning targets back to those activities/notes and use them as a resource. When it comes time to prepare for assessments on LTs 1-5 (for example) they know exactly where to find the information to help prepare them. Once we have covered a learning target, the students mark it off and it is "fair game" and can be assessed.
